What is dyslexia?
Dyslexia is a language-based learning difficulty quite common among children and adults. It affects reading, writing and spelling, the foundations of school learning. Children with dyslexia, and similarly ADHD and Autism, have to learn the school curriculum in different ways to accommodate their brains’ unique ways of understanding. Dyslexic children are more than capable of continued learning, with many dyslexic people achieving great things in life. They may, however, require remediation and a special skill set to deal with it.
Dyslexic children have trouble with language, reading, writing and/or spelling, so you will notice problems with phonetics and writing. You may also notice slower reading and a struggle to sound out words. This is especially noticeable when reading words out of context such as single words on flash cards or lists. Dyslexic children require more time to read words, and they often make mistakes – it is important not to rush or reprimand them throughout the process.
When will I notice these characteristics?
Children start learning words from a very young age, and signs of dyslexia in children can be prominent from as early as three. It is important to note that all children are different, and while slow or advanced, Dyslexia can present itself in different ways. However, when you start noticing consistent traits, it is a good idea to bring your child in for a dyslexia assessment.
Is it easily treated?
As mentioned above, dyslexic children thrive in an environment that is suited to their unique learning abilities. The earlier the dyslexic test, the better, because children have to learn how to work with their learning disorder. A child doesn’t grow out of it, they simply adapt, and we at PECS can assist by providing the best possible support.
We provide a dyslexia test for children that will supply you with accurate results and informative guidance to ensure that your child gets the best possible help.
As with all situations, early intervention is the key – and every good intervention starts with a good assessment.
